Or does that detour blind you to what the scenery is all about?

I think your question is symbolic to the "journey" of experiencing life moment by moment. Change teaches humility. To approach life with humility means that you understand that you aren't all that important in the total picture. You can make plans, but that detour teaches that you aren't in control. Even though its you and your life, you aren't the CEO. Where does life comes from? God created all. We have the freedom to choose. When the detour arrives (sickness, loss to a disaster, etc.) We can be surprised to learn that in those quiet places in life beautiful people arrive. Where do those beautiful people come from? That is how God arrives, through the many people that respond to circumstances. They inspire, because "they" show us that there are good people. The detour can show you where you need to be inspired to be better in your life. And then to be happy. We can feel like quitting if the "road" you are on isn't so good. But in quitting you would miss what could be. Quitting is forever.

I always enjoy the scenery especially on a detour since you never know what you will encounter. It can be a great adventure.

My life has never seen a detour. That would mean not recognizing the path you are on. Sure, I have come to many cross roads. Then I choose which road to take. For me, the detour is for someone who lets others choose their path.

a lot of people are really good at ruining the present for themselves. the mind can easily get ahead of itself and the significance of whats happening now is just overlooked. its a simple decision. a simple reminder to stay in the now. whenever you feel "not into it" its time for another reminder. and a lot of times even the reminder doesn't work. for whatever reason you may feel just not into it. but as that moment becomes the past you reflect and regret and guilt comes in and after long it becomes grief. humbling yourself is a crucial step and we should really think about what that means because some people have this pride in the guise of humility and they don't have the foggiest clue as to what humility really is. it brings you back to the real

One of my favorite things to do is go for a drive and get lost. You get to see the most amazing things. A change of scene can jump start you.
