Language is undoubtedly a necessary condition for thought. Thinking implies conscious reflection of perception: past, present and projected future; both actual and imagined. In turn, consciousness presupposes the ability to apperceive (to perceive the self), to perceive perceptions of the world, and to possess the ability to converse in a natural language (such as that in which we are currently writing). A thought must contain a content, such as a perception of a tree. To this content, we must ascribe a label: a word, such as "tree" in order that we may be able to relate it, meaningfully and consciously to other perceptions and other words. Perception, alone, will undoubtedly yield present experience within the perceiver: animals and human babies are able to act on instinct to react to preprogrammed stimuli in order to survive (babies to a lesser extent), yet there is no relation between these perceptions. All conscious experience occurs in the moment and no consciously perceivable memory is retained past the present time. What language provides us with is a relational network of meaning and understanding: a conceptual scheme (reference to Kant) if you will. The semantics required to refer perceptions unto one's self indeed stems from this ability for language: without it, self-reference would be impossible. Without the ability for self-reference, there is no ability for reference within the public domain and, more importantly, no conscious experience in the fullest meaning of the term (encompassing more than just the present awareness), within the mental domain.

Thinking Without Words

Mental pictures based on things they see, sign language, feelings, etc. We can think in other ways than words. Say you're thinking about steak. You probably don't just think of the word, but you have a mental picture and flavor associated with it. I sometimes wonder if thinking without words would actually be more efficient since you'd be thinking more of the pure idea rather than the language.

it's probably much easier for a deaf person to create a mental image than a blind person. deaf people do have a language and are generally better at reading emotions and subtle cues that we often miss because we're so distracted by sound.
a blind person is similar in that they won't think in a way that's recognizable to those of us without this handicap, but is in other ways more advanced.

1. In images. Most of all audio-associations are audio-visual associations.
2. They might think using images that represent physical commands.
3. People who can't hear may have parts of their auditory system as non-functional, but most have Brodman's area 41 functioning, will allows them to have an internal voice.

Yes. Certain features of thought indicate that it isn't verbal, for instance if it were, translation and interpretation would be impossible, and people would never have the experience of looking for the right word when speaking if their ideas were clear in their own minds.

Good question. Dolphins apparently communicate via sonar pictures with each other. Humanities gift of communication is a double edged sword. We can share noble ideas and thoughts, but we can also lie to each other better than any other living creature.

they use sign language, even if they don't know any words, they will use common sense and use there hands in some way to communicate, like if they were hungry they would touch their mouth. Little by little, they will learn sign language.
