Question:
Why is 2012 so significant, and why are people thinking it will be part of the apocalypse?

The movie 2012 that is coming out soon is about the apocalypse, apparently this is based on a true story. My friends told me it was a chain of events that have been successfully predicted, and that 2012 will be the apocalypse.
Why is this? Any info will be good.
Thanks.

There is nothing at all significant about 2012. The movie and the prediction are based only upon absurd lies. Nothing has been successfully predicted about this by anyone. It is merely an elaborate hoax. No one predicted anything bad about 2012 except some charlatans. Jose Arguelles lied about the Mayan calendar to begin the hoax in his 1988 book "The Mayan Factor" that genuine Mayan scholars said is garbage. He predicted the end in 1999. When that was wrong, Nancy Lieder recycled the hoax, added Niburu, an imaginary planet, to it, and said the end was in 2003. When that was wrong, other charlatans recycled the hoax again, added more lies to it and said the end was in 2012. In 2013, other scoundrels are likely to recycle it a third time and say 2016-2020 is the end. Your friends are quite wrong. They are just repeating part of the latest version of the hoax.

How can something supposedly set 3 years in the future be based on a true story? How can a chain of events have been successfully predicted, if none of it has happened yet?

Its quite amazing how easily so many people buy into a marketing campaign for a movie. Its a MOVIE, not reality.

I saw the movie "2010" about astronauts orbiting Jupiter - do you think that will happen next year?

I saw a movie called "War of the Worlds" (3 versions, actually) - nothing like that has happened so far.

I saw a movie about a giant lizard attacking New York - must have missed that "prediction".

There is absolutely no scientific evidence of any kind to support even one of the claims being made about the world ending in 2012. And while the computer graphics look good, there is no actual science behind the movie either.

Time people did some research:

The Mayans used the Meso-American Long Count Calendar, and they didn't create it themselves. It's based around winter soltices which occur ever Dec 21st (and our own calendar invent in 1528 is based around them as well. it's why we have a leap year ever 4 years so that the winter soltice falls on Dec 21st every year because the Earth's year is actually 365.25 days.) OTHER CULTURES used the Meso-American Long Count Calendar also. And some Mayan calendars have dates that go to the year 4772.

You know what happens on Dec 21st 2012? Nothing... there's a galactic alignment.. and by alignment I mean if you look towards the sun on the day you can be pretty sure the center of galaxy is behind it in that direction.

As for a "POLE SHIFT!" OMG! EVERYBODY PANIC! If such a thing could happen, it would have happened already in Earth's history, and not only that, the amount of energy required to do so would be far greater than Jupiter or "NIBIRU" or "TIAMAT" could possibly do, and would destroy the Earth like it had been hit by the Death Star. People are getting Geomagnetic Reversal confused with "POLE SHIFT." Geomagnetic Reversals happen a lot, and take about 5000 years to complete. You'll never notice it in your lifetime. And all that happens is your compass points south instead of North. If you look up in the Sky, Polaris is still NORTH.

Raving ratbags say the world will end because they are ratbags and that is the sort of thing raving ratbags do.

Crooks say the world will end because they think they can make money out of selling worthless junk to uncritical kids and dim-bulb adults. They also have false documentaries made for unscrupulous TV channels to screen to promote sales and ratings.

Would-be practical jokers ask this because their limited imaginations tell them it is still amusing after the 40,000th repetition.

The "world" will end when it is struck by a real, not movie asteroid or is irradiated by a neutron star merger within a couple thousand light years. Or when the Sun goes through a red giant stage in a few billion years.

Note to Christians - read Mark - nobody knows the day or the hour, not the angels and not Jesus.

The Mayans predicted nothing and neither did any other ancient people, that particularly includes Nostradamus.

The disaster in 2012 myth is entirely lies told for commercial gain. It has no scientific, historical, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist or Hindu content and is completely fraudulent. It is a filthy exploitation of hysteria among children and a few dim adults that has been going on for some years based on the ravings of near-certifiable loonies and near-criminal frauds.

The movie appears to be CGI destructo-porn and is intended for the low taste of a target audience of teenage boys and immature adults. The scenario is a prophecy of doom that was supposed to happen in 2003 according to Nancy Lieder. The movie will be as plot-free as possible and the characters will be cardboard cutouts. Somewhere in the movie, probably about 20 minutes from the end some hero type will tell some cute kid "It's gonna be alright". And of course it will for them.

If there are suicides as a result of this malicious garbage I hope to see the sources charged in court with some criminal offence. We can start with fraud.

These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.

Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

"But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come." (Mark 13:32-33)

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.

The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.

The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus' advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.

Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

The 2012 end date (December 21st to be exact) is derived from the end of the ancient Mayan calendar. This calendar lasted for thousands of years, but it inexplicably ends on December 21st, 2012. Who cares, right?

Well...

The Prophecy of the Popes was written by St. Malachy in the 11th century AD, and is a series of 112 short Latin phrases claiming to predict each of the popes to come after him. They do a pretty good job. The 112th "short phrase" is not short at all, but is a paragraph describing the end of the world. Pope Benedict XVI (the current pope) is the 111th pope on the list. That means the next pope will be the last pope. At least according to St. Malachy.

And...

The I Ching is the oldest Chinese text still in existence. It is a series of 64 hexagrams, or series of six lines, describing 64 different states of change. The book was and continues to be used for divination purposes. Famed psychonaut Terence McKenna famously derived the rate of change in the universe from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, and from that pattern determined the ebb and flow of change in the universe since the I Ching was written. On December 21st 2012, according to McKenna's calculations, the universe will enter a period of infinite change.

Those are the three main ideas behind the 2012 end date. There are more. The Large Hadron Collider, the Technological Singularity, Nostradamus, nuclear war, food shortages, aliens, Hopi prophecies, etc. The main point to take away is that no one truly knows what is going to happen. In my humble opinion, it will not be the end of the world, but the end of an age. Hope that helped.

I have alot of info for you, there are several different theories that go along with 2012 , ill talk about the most popular one, the one i believe the movie is based off of, the end of they mayan calander,

the mayans had a time system based on astrological cycles, 2012 is seen to be the time when the sun reaches the center of the galaxy, there is said to be black hole in this location, of course there is some variation to this in saying that it will be when the sun alines with the center of the universe, it is not known what would actually happen, there are different theories as to what this could meen when the sun is in this location, one being that the magnetic polars will switch leaving earth vonerable to radiation and uv rays, things of that nature, others think the world will colapse or the sun will explode or get consumed,

there are a couple documentaries that go over all the theories and beliefs, one is called 2012 science of superstition, the other is,decoding the past doomsday 2012

they go over the scientific aspects, which are speculative at best, and cover religious beliefs and differnt cultural beliefs,

your friend is wrong about it being succesfully predicted chain of events. think about it... how can you know its a succesful prediction untill it happens? right? it has to be proven before you can say that. as of right now there is no proof that anything will happen, only theories, and some theories say nothing will happen its just a scare tactic, like when hailys comet was supposed to hit earth but then it didnt even come remotely close to being anywhere near the planet.

check out the documentaries they will tell you allot about the theories, remember they are just theories, nothing has been proven is all speculations

confident, I do. there are a number of predictors pointing to the top of the worldwide (in 2012) different than the Mayan Calendar. it style of feels quite sensical to me pondering overpopulation and dwindling organic materials will make for impossible residing circumstances in the close to destiny if the worldwide keeps. human beings won't shop their legs crossed so that is inevitable that we are going to run out in short order. Water is straight away drying up simply by bigger call for and bigger drought. that's for the final that it ends straight away. i'm basically attempting to be a solid individual like continually.

2012 is significant because of the mayan calendar.

the mayans were people who lived a long time ago and developed primarily astronomy and calendar systems in their lifetime, but it is due to the fact that the mayan calendars end in 2012 (on the 21st december to be exact) that people believe this is when the world is going to end.

whether this will be the end of the world i'm not sure, but i hope i've helped to answer your question anyway :)

Well, you see, Obama, the Bush Administration, and Hitler's relatives are going to team up with Kim Jong Il, who are going to coincide with Stephen Harper to blow up Mars in order to find rare minerals. But they will (in fact) miss, and the missile will ricochet off of a series of asteroids, forcing it to come back to earth. This will in turn destroy part of North Korea, who will think that it was the US. The Russians will become angry about this, and will decide to attack Korea, who will be defended by the Taliban, due to their unknown historic friendship. Once all this is in play, Canada will send nukes over to Mexico, who will get pissed and destroy Antarctica. Only Australia will be left unbombed, but the intense amount of radiation will in-turn kill them off aswell.

This has all been accurately predicted.

Yes, 2012 will in fact be the end of the universe and everything and everyone you have ever loved will be engulfed in a river of molten lava. They will suffer. Maybe if you would quit sodomizing your pets this wouldnt need to happen.
