Question:
Is Truth relative or absolute?
2009-06-07 00:15:05 UTC
One of my friends said that things which are true will always be true. I do not really agree with that. I think truth is relative to time, space, perspective, etc...
But I am not really sure.
Could anyone explain me clearly with examples?

You're both right.

Truth is relative: Research.

Truth is absolute: Vision.

It's two different stages of self evolution:

1. Research.

2. Cognition.

3. Thought.

4. Choice.

5. Vision.

6. Discovery.

Good luck!

Relative Truth Vs Absolute Truth

Unless truth is absolute, it is not truth. A relative truth is only a useful lie. An approximate truth is only called so politely; it is a lie, because something is either truth or untruth. 'There is no way in between.

There is only one truth. What German Chancellor Adenauer has counted as four, are four aspects of it. He says there are four truths: the simple, the pure, the plain, and the whole truth. The first thing to remember is that the truth is always whole, just as the circle is always whole. You cannot have a half-circle. The moment it is half, it is only an arc, it is not a circle. The very word circle means the whole. If you say it is only a relative truth, then it is not truth because it is dependent, and truth is never dependent on anything.

A loving couple wanted to marry immediately, but the girl's strong-willed and domineering mother adamantly opposed the union.

"I can't help it," said the distraught girl to her boyfriend. "Mother thinks you are effeminate."

Reflecting for a moment, he replied, "You know, compared with her, maybe I am."

This is relative truth, but a relative truth is not the truth. Only the absolute and the whole is the truth -- and it is bound to be plain.

It's both.

Something cannot be true without a reference point.

I can say "You can look in the night sky and ALWAYS see the constellation Big Dipper"

My statement is Truth. It is also relative AND absolute to that reference point, in this case, my position on the planet.

If I went to Australia it would be false.

Another example could be with feelings for a loved one. Those are intimate feelings shared and a bond created that only you two within the relationship can have relativeity and an absolute definition.

Veil of Perception has a huge role to play in the word may people value as "truth".

I'm more inclined to the postmodernist idea that there is no absolute Truth with a capital T, though I'm very interested in the statement above which says that relative truth is absolutely true, which is paradoxical.

I suppose it is improper to assume there are only two kinds of truth. Our notion of truth seems incomplete.

there are two major camps in this debate: the coherency views of truth and the correspondence views of truth. The coherency views (e.g. pragmatism) hold that statement p is true iff p coheres with a body of knowledge. As bodies of knowledge tend to change over time, the truth value of p will change with it. The correspondence view of truth holds that p is true iff there is some state of the world such that p. This view is often thought to hold that truth is absolute since what makes p true is the fact that it correspondence with the world and is thus subject independent.

Which view is the right view? To answer this view we need to ask, "What does it take for a theory of truth to be true?" I don't know how to answer this...

Truth cannot be absolute and relative. You have to read and research more on your own. Don't depend on blogs and twits.

Truths based on proven fact are absolute. eg The Earth is a globe and is not flat.

Truths based on subjectivity and one's personal opinion are relative. eg I am a good person.

All of truth is relative to the system that decides it.

There cannot be absolute truths, that is, there cannot be a system of truth that inludes all truths. Eternal truth is nonsense.

There are no truths before there were minds!

Truth is absolute it does not dependent on anyone or anything.

everything is relative, this is the only absolute truth.
