I could think of this funny answer: Miss world means "she is the most beautiful women among all the women in this world", miss universe means "She is the most beautiful women among all others female species including aliens".

Miss universe means that all the planets and stars and black holes and aliens voted, where as miss world is purely a girl liked on planet Earth.
Really the difference is dumb and dumber. =]

I think they are run by different people.
They shouldn't use Universe in the title, it doesn't make sense.
