Would you kill somebody like Ha Shipman before they dealt zero damage?

I refer, needless to say, to the British serial killer Dr. Harold Shipman, who was tried and sentenced for 50 murders.

I would stop them, preferably by incarceration but if lethal force was the only way then yes.

As much as I want to be utilitarian, and say yes, I cannot. The suffering of Shipman would be less significant than the suffering of all his victims and his death would be the greater good, but it is unethical to kill him or others like him. By killing murderers and terrorists, we do not eradicate the problem. The ideas and beliefs which cause such evil will prevail beyond the life of those who hold these ideals.

Oh, no-one's responded to this?

I think in principle certainly yes - police and governments usually have no problem killing hostage-takers, for example, if they believe that the hostages are in danger.

Of course, that's assuming lots of things, such as that you can't find other ways to prevent the killings.
