I've always thought.. since people are the most adaptable things on this earth (besides viruses and stuff) we will find a solution to any problem we face, PARTICULARLY when we NEED to fix the problem. We run out of fuels and oils, then we will (very quickly) find a solution.

It just seems to be the way human nature works.

We may run out but governments wouldn't

The amount of oil they have backed up to supply things such as tanks, air force planes and navy vessels i predict is amazing.

The human sector however i believe will have to adapt to cleaner sources of energy. Solar powered cars for examples.

The world would also be pretty screwed. We don't realise just how much we depend on oil and doubt we shall until the final weeks of oil and the price US$1000000 a barrel.

Everything will come to a crashing halt, That is if it happend this year or very soon. Crime rates would increase dramatically, people would start robbing one another.

Other countires might take advantage of us because of our halted infrastructure, for example why wouldn't china invade while we're so weak. There would probably be lots of die offs because we could no longer ship food as easily. Power plants would shut down, not all but some.

Basically we would be half way to the dark ages

After all the dark vision of the future without oil have been said above, I would like to add a little optimistic view: There would be way less pollution. And global warming problem will be partly solved.

I'm sure corporate America already has a backup plan in place that will cost the consumers way more than the "solution" will cost. Synthetic oil is already being made from non-petroleum products and alternative fuels are already available.

we will have to adjust. considering that the first car was electric i have always thought it sort of odd that we are still using inefficient gas powered engines. when life gives us a problem, we humans are tenacious about finding the answer. we are adaptable and that is how we have survived so long. being mostly hairless, not overly strong, and having no real on the body weapons or protection.

We'll have gradually switched to natural gas and liquids derived from shale, then gas and oil derived from coal. Then solar. Then crickets, in tandem, rubbing their hind legs together.
